  Dear David,

I hope you are doing well. I wanted to reach out to you as I thought you might know of someone who might be interested in an opportunity I have for one of my clients, a trading firm in Chicago, as a junior system administrator/level 2 support analyst.

My client is currently looking for someone with 3-5 years experience in system administration in Linux OS environments with some networking background a plus in (WAN, LAN, BGP, TCP, UDP). This person will be working with a small technical team here in Chicago supporting 2nd level support issues as well as system maintenance in a Linux environment. This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking to gain more exposure to the financial industry and to further their technical skill set.

Would you by chance know of anyone who might be looking for an opportunity like this? I appreciate any referrals!

Best,

What follows are s= ome questions. Ponder them and offer answers, or insights that might help b= uild useful answers, if you're so inclined.

What is free software? What is open source software? Are they the same thing? What is the usefulness of the word =E2=80=9Clibre=E2=80=9D?

A creator wants to distribute his/her program under an open source license, and wants to insure that the program remains =E2=80=9Cfree=E2=80=9D for his/her customers' customers. Wh= ich license might (s)he choose?

BSD was created under a license which allows proprietization of the product. Is BSD still =E2=80=9Cfree software=E2=80=9D? What license is it distributed under? Which well-known proprietary OS is a derivative of BSD?

What is a society? What is it's purpose? Are people social or independent?

What is a school? What is it's purpose? Are people curious or apathetic, vigorous or lazy, ignorant or educated? Who teaches better, a novice or an expert? Is emotion important in engineering disciplines?

Heather may have more to say later, but I'll throw out some thoughts now. It looks pretty awesome for our purposes. The cabin we saw has 4 full bathrooms and plenty of beds of varying sizes from bunks to doubles. You will have to share a room with one or more others. You won't have to share a bed. But you can if you want to, I guess. There are ~tons~ of things to do there, other than study Linux. You might even have time to do some of them. I noticed: frisbee golf stations, a recreation center, a pool, mini golf, hiking trails, and lots of friendly staff to pose questions to. One staffer even knew what Linux is, and thinks this camp idea is pretty cool. You should bring a buddy. The overall structure I'm planning is heavily "pair" oriented, one person runs the console, and the other one advises, then they swap roles and repeat the activity. In addition to the usual, you should bring a mountain bike, hiking shoes, a frisbee, a favorite game, and/or a favorite movie. Or, if you tend to get over-stimulated, maybe bring ear-plugs and a sleeping mask. If you get over-socialized, use the hiking shoes. There are plenty of places right in SMR to buy the thing you forgot to bring with you: drinks, snacks, supplies, whatever... but they're some distance from the cabin. ie: You won't be walking to the candy machine in your socks at midnight. Everything else you might need is available in Winter Park, about a 20-minute drive. You can show up as early as 3PM on Wednesday, and leave the cabin as late as 10AM on Monday. If you're in the cabin on a non-teaching day, I reserve the right to put you to work. As a matter of fact, I double that right on teaching days. Smoking is outdoors only, and may have location restrictions if the risk of fire is high. We can check when we get there. Right now, the risk is low, but there are a few months before we head up. The cabin we saw had a fire-pit within 5 minutes walk, and a coffee-can with an inch of sand is a good solution. -- David L. That's part of the reason David has put the Linux Camp together and tied it to the LPIC 101 and 102 exams. Even then, though, $1500-1900 can be quite an investment if you're unsure you know enough about Linux to keep up during the sessions. After Tuesday's CLUE meeting, I realized I wasn't the only person that felt a need for a little practice to ensure I'm up to speed for the LPIC-1. To help remedy that, I've decided to start a study group. My current plan is to meet every Sunday night for 4 hours (once I've found a location) and go over what I "think" we'll need to know for the Linux Camp. (I am willing to adjust the times/days if there is enough interest for something different.) I will be learning right beside you since I'm not much more than a novice myself. If you've been waiting to reserve a seat because of your fear, lets work together to get past it. Commit to the Linux Camp and lets get to work. This is going to take place in the Tech Center at "2-10 Home Buyers Warranty". The address is: 10375 E Harvard Ave Denver, CO 80231 These sessions will occur every Sunday from 5pm to 9pm starting this Sunday. I figured this first week, we would go over the pretest that is in the Linux+ book to see where each of us may need the most work. I do not plan on having any kind of official curriculum after that but it is my intention to start with any questions from each chapter and as a group see if we can answer them. Remember I'll be learning along with the rest of the group and we all will have our own areas of struggle. The big hope is that everyone can be comfortable when we go into the Linux Camp at the end of August.
