So freenode says they've banned mibbit (since 2010).  It was obvious that my original connection 
attempt failed.  It wasn't obvious that getting there by hand didn't get me where I wanted to be.

Using Gary's link I don't see anyone else, so I'm still not sure I'm in the right place.
