Closing the loop on this:
The microphone boom worked just as expected. It's fiddly and in the way, but much less so than the other.
I haven't yet tried my phone headset for a BBB conference, and I may never, because...
My Logitech QuickCam Orbit Sphere webcam has a microphone that works perfectly, even at a small distance. Feedback can be avoided with headphones or careful positioning of speakers.
